A colorful canopy “UR” way

An undulating and colorful canopy brings praise, and customers, to a seaside haunt.

Yogurt UR Way, a new business on the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk in Hollywood, Fla., needed an entry canopy for an existing building it was adapting for its newest franchise shop.

Awnings of Hollywood, designers and fabricators hired for the job, got it right by all counts. This dynamic canopy has three-dimensional changes, vertical curves and horizontal curves on the main structure with a lace-on cover and a wrap style valance. And it also meets Florida’s structural safety requirements while finessing the design. Despite the complex framing, the canopy passes the 76mps [170 mph] wind load of Florida’s stringent building code.

The canopy is square on three sides with a variable projection front bar. The main structure (with dark blue fabric) has a lace-on cover for removal in the event of a hurricane, and the three ancillary wave structures are staple-in extrusion frames that are bolted to the main frame for the same purpose. The canopy also acts as a dining cover and required guttering at the rear, although there is virtually nothing to attach it to.

The projection measures 1.4m on the left and swoops out to 2m on the right. The gutter
at the rear is a solid welded, structural component of the frame with a flap of material in
it to maintain water integrity. The main frame was manufactured in one piece as were each of the ancillary structures, but the actual final installation was bolted together on-site. Awnings of Hollywood won a 2012 International Achievement Award of Excellence for its efforts.
