What a web they weave—Uni Stutt’s robots string carbon & glass fibers overhead

Industry News, News | May 1, 2017 | By:

Researchers and students are finding inspiration in the webs that moths spin. The collaborators are from the University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE). The researchers and student have applied their efforts toward stretching the possibilities in digital construction with the aid of robotics and drones to produce full-size pavilion constructions that explore the capabilities of carbon fiber.

Led by Achim Menges, director of the ICD, and Jan Knippers, from the ITKE, the professors and their students produced a 12 meter long cantilevered structure using more than 180 km of woven resin-impregnated glass and carbon fiber.
