During the summer of 2007, the engineering department of the United States Army, Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., contracted Columbia Screen & Tents to review recurring problematic solar control issues at Hilton Field Review stand where all outdoor Army ceremonies and commencements are conducted. The solution, reached after a 90-day assessment, was a custom staple system solar control aluminum frame awning with mesh weave, which won an Award of Excellence in the commercial awnings category of the 2008 International Achievement Awards, reducing 80 to 90% of the solar heat gain and glare. The stadium’s 152m length meant the 20 sections would be about 7m wide for ease of installation handling. Shortly thereafter, plans were submitted, approved and the contract to design and build was awarded to Columbia Screen & Tents.
