The homeowner’s idea was to create the warm and comfortable feeling of the ocean beach by her swimming pool, as well as gain privacy and protect her children from UV rays while enjoying the outdoors. The difficulty of this project was installation and design of the system, which won an Award of Excellence in the retractable awnings and canopies category of the 2008 International Achievement Awards. The size of required coverage was 5.8m wide and 6m extension from the wall — impossible to achieve using conventional lateral style awnings. Rolltec Rolling Systems utilized an industrial strength system where heavy-duty extruded aluminum tracks project from the wall, slope down, and then curve to the floor. There was a limited space from the home to the fence, and having a pool in the center of the property made assembly and installation of oversized awning a matter of precision.
