Structure defines gathering place

The client was looking for a unique and elegant extension to an existing raised terrace to provide a covered space for dining and entertaining at their residence in Val-Morin, Québec, Canada. Working with a pre-existing terrace that had six lower-level columns proved to be an interesting challenge. The surface area was substantial, yet the structure could not feel or look crowded. Adjustable metallic hardware facilitated the assembly of the wood components, created a space between wood and fabric, and added to the feeling of lightness under the structure. The structure, which won an Outstanding Achievement Award in the free-standing canopies category of the 2007 International Achievement Awards, is made of a combination of wood and tensioned PVC and offers protection against the elements and defines a gathering place that is at once shaded and luminous.
