The 1H:1V geosynthetic-reinforced steepened slope, which won an Award of Excellence in the geosynthetic projects category of the 2007 International Achievement Awards, as constructed at the southwest end of Runway 5 to extend it approximately 152m. To our knowledge, this is the highest green-faced (vegetated) 1H:1V slope constructed in the United States, 74m above Yeager Airport. Bridges, walls and reinforced slopes were evaluated as construction options. The geosynthetic-reinforced slope provided the most economical alternative; plus, the green-faced system was more aesthetic for the surrounding West Virginia hills and valleys. Using Mirafi Miramesh GR as the face treatment allowed for fast germination and good vegetative growth, and ensured the project’s success.
