Greenwich Market gets a makeover

Hopkins Architects, London, U.K., recently submitted plans for the regeneration of Greenwich Market. The plans took three years of extensive research to produce. David Selby, director of Hopkins Architects, says, “The market regeneration has very particular needs which have demanded that we draw upon experience developed over many years in the fields of lightweight structures, energy efficient design and the inventive use of traditional materials.”

The plans seek to highlight the market as the heart of Greenwich Town Centre and include the addition of a 100-bed boutique hotel and the redevelopment of historic buildings surrounding the market. Fabric will be used to construct a lightweight canopy roof enclosing the market, creating a light, spacious and airy atmosphere in which visitors can enjoy a stroll through the market. Upon approval, construction on the project will begin in January 2010. The market will reopen in early 2012, in time for the London Olympics.
