Beijing’s National Stadium, designed by the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron for the 2008 Olympics and often called the “Bird’s Nest” for its unusual shape, was awarded the prestigious Lubetkin Prize for most outstanding architecture built outside the European Union and designed by an RIBA member. The stadium was designed with the cooperation from the China Architectural Design and Research Group, Arup Sport, Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong, and the artist Ai Wei Wei. The roof of the stadium incorporates single layers of ETFE.
