Commencement ceremony features colorful canopy

Artists Jenna Didier and Oliver Hess (founders of Materials & Applications in Los Angeles) created a shade canopy of blue and white streamers with designer Emily White for the spring commencement ceremony at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. Called “Pomona College: String Theory,” the canopy was woven on site from trucker’s grade nylon webbing and ripstop parachute fabric using a strategy developed from string figures—a form called the “clown’s collar”—creating a net suspended over the college quadrangle. Designed for reuse after the graduation, the canopy utilizes standard components for ease of assembly and take down. Students and faculty of the college assisted Didier, Hess and White with the weaving of the nylon streamers prior to ceremony.
