The eight 5-foot by 8-foot sound-absorbing “Acoustical FireFlys” that float above the Patten Free Library teen area allow a lively range of programming to take place, including films and maker workshops, without disturbing other library patrons. The new teen area has a distinctive high ceiling and a curved outer wall carved out of an existing area within the library, so the sound absorption solution needed to be relatively transparent to preserve the character of the space. Each frame-supported “FireFly” hangs from a single point, with a stretch fabric face and a sound-absorbing fabric backer. The sail-like shapes resonate with the architect’s design theme of exploration, inspired by Bath, Maine’s shipbuilding heritage.
