Exterior Shades and Screens, International Achievement Awards 2019 Outstanding Achievement

As part of the renovation of the outdoor Muny Theatre (St. Louis Municipal Opera Theatre), the client wanted to hide the enormous stage speakers from the audience. Two large mesh panels, each 10 feet 10 inches by 34 feet 6 inches, were installed behind cables to create a concave shape in front of the speakers. The scrim-like construction allows 70 percent airflow through the fabric for optimal acoustic transparency and minimal billowing. Mesh 70 is a wide-width, open weave PVC-coated fabric suitable for long-term exterior use. The mesh, which works well as a front projection surface, was painted to match the plaster exterior surface of the musical stage walls. The client loved the look of the panels over the speakers and how well they blended in with the existing stage walls.
