Structure, awnings and umbrellas create inviting look

The Miramar Hotel in Waikiki, Hawaii, desired a centerpiece structure, awnings and umbrellas, which won an Award of Excellence in the multiple fabric structures category of the 2007 International Achievement Awards, over its bar and special events room to create a new and inviting look. To seamlessly take the unique cable-tensioned structure around a 90-degree corner with different projections on each leg of the canopy was a challenge. In addition, the only access to the pool deck was from the parking structure of hotel next door, and everything needed to pass over a 3.66m wall. No one in Hawaii had ever attempted a project like this before. Hanging these from the eighth floor was dangerous. At one point the crew had to adjust a center fitting which required hoisting an individual in a bosun’s chair out the eighth-story parking garage.
