Australia’s largest temporary shade structure keeps sports cool

Tradition is important at Victoria Park Racecourse, where sporting events, from equestrian competitions to the Clipsal 500 Adelaide V-8 Supercar race, attract South Australian enthusiasts. Full sun-exposure detracts from patrons’ enjoyment, and while permanent solutions are debated, Shadework International, Stirling, Australia, installed the largest temporary shade structure in Australia in Victoria Park. Roger Cook, chair of the SA Motorsport Board, says engineers checking on the design found that “no one knows of a bigger one in the world.”

Shadework designed the structure, managed the project and commissioned the shadecloth, while columns and trusses to support the behemoth were made by South Australian firm Bahnert’s Steel Supplies, Klemzig. The SA Motorsport Board intends to hire out the structure for other sporting events and interstate race meets.
