Montgomery Shade & Awning Ltd. | Warrenton, Va., United States

The intent of this project, which won an Outstanding Achievement Award in the retractable awnings and canopies category of the 2008 International Achievement Awards, was to design and install a motorized retractable shading system on an existing custom built flat-roofed pergola that would be resistant to moderate wind. The client’s five-year-old pergola was custom made with exotic wood and detailing. Planted vines had not flourished and the clients were unable to use this outdoor area. The shade system was to mount above, but not interfere with, the pergola. It also needed to be retractable, be motorized and have the best quality and long-term warranty. The Stobag Targa retractable tensioned awning system is designed to provide sun protection with moderate winds and, if installed with slope, protects from rain. The customers wanted a near “invisible” retractable cover. The frame system was powder coated black and is mounted above the main arbor rails. The profile complements the arbor and is unobtrusive. The roller mechanism easily fitted under the overhang and is barely visible.
