SHADE Industries Inc., Phoenix, Ariz., was recognized with an Outstanding Achievement Award in the 2017 IFAI International Achievement Awards. The award-winning project at Calvary Chapel is located in an unusual spot—a vacant portion of an open-air shopping center. The project involved creating a striking entry to the church by designing a functional and comfortable outdoor gathering area for the congregation before and after services and for special church events.
The design includes two large reinforced support columns, 15 wall brackets and two large structural cables that support five large custom shade sails over a newly remodeled church patio. Designing the reinforced support columns proved to be challenging due to the extreme forces pulling on each anchor point that would deform the columns and make it difficult to tension the five large shade sails attached at various heights. The solution required additional support on each of the columns to achieve a completely plumb column. The completed shade sails over the remodeled patio create a comfortable gathering area and a striking architectural accent to what would otherwise be an ordinary shopping center in the desert southwest.
Shade Industries Inc. was also awarded the Award of Excellence in the 2017 IFAI International Achievement Awards. The winning project is located at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in southern Arizona.
