Award of Excellence

This poolside project was created by Rainier Industries Ltd., Tukwila, Wash. The client requested an 18-foot 7-inch wide by 8-foot tall power projection screen system for poolside use to watch movies and sporting events. The challenge was to design a screen that wouldn’t be affected by the weather, wind or reflection from the infinity pool between the screen and the projector. The screen fabric needed to be durable to stand up to the desert sun and wind, but not too bulky due to the large size of the screen, so that it could roll neatly into its housing when not in use. DuratexTM 18-oz white blackout vinyl fit the bill, and the client was delighted with the result.

Outstanding Achievement

This coastline protection project was created by Awnings of Hollywood, Hollywood, Fla. The assignment was to increase the all-weather seating capacity at this beachside restaurant located near sensitive turtle breeding grounds in South Florida, while preserving the stunning view. The project included covering an open area in front of an existing retractable canopy with a 50-foot by 14-foot fixed canopy and enclosing both structures with all-weather motorized Thompson Weathershield tension shades, which can withstand winds up to 50 mph. The fixed awning was designed to visually resemble the retractable shade system by using horizontal beams, durable Tenara® 4T20HF Architectural Fabric by SEFAR® AG and Soltis® 86 by Serge Ferrari North America Inc.
